A 28-year-old from Naples was placed under house arrest, seriously suspected of extortion against a 78-year-old Roman.
On January 9, the victim asked the Carabinieri for help, reporting that, on the afternoon of January 7, he had been contacted by telephone by a man who claimed to be an official of the Italian Embassy in America and that his son had been arrested following a road accident that presumably occurred in America, where he lives.
Another person pretending to be the victim's son told the victim to do what the alleged official told him. Then a fake diplomatic official knocked on the old man's door and asked him to hand over money and jewelry as a guarantee fund for his son. The investigations thus allowed them to gather serious evidence against the 28-year-old who ended up under house arrest.
