Marco Di Giovanni, the 19-year-old from Pescara who died yesterday in hospital from the very serious injuries he suffered in a road accident that occurred during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday on the seafront of the Adriatic capital, donated his organs, thus giving hope to other people. The collection operations were just completed: for the heart, the team from Napoli, for the liver that of Rome, for the kidneys that of L'Aquila, while the corneas went to the Eye Bank of the capital of Abruzzo. The young man was hospitalized in desperate conditions in the Intensive Care Unit.
Yesterday morning, after the diagnosis of presumed brain death, the so-called observation period began, at the end of which, in the late afternoon, the death was certified. After the consent of the family, the procedure for the removal of the organs began. The activities involved various departments of the hospital, under the direction of the transplant coordinator, Rosamaria Zocaro, with the supervision of the Regional Transplant Center.
The body of the young man is now at the disposal of the judicial authorities, for further investigations of the case. The 19-year-old was riding a scooter and was traveling along the coast when he collided with a garbage truck that was entering the seafront from Viale Muzii. Transported to the hospital, his conditions immediately appeared very serious. A fifteen-year-old girl who was on the scooter with him was also injured, but not seriously. The Pescara Highway Police took care of the surveys and investigations.
