The residents of the three buildings on Corso Umberto I located in front of the building that collapsed last July 16 are returning to occupy their homes. As announced during a press conference by the mayor Luigi Mennella and by Professor Antonio De Luca, a consultant chosen by the municipal administration to follow the safety procedures for the area affected by the collapse, a structure was built (made of iron tubes) that allows the entrances to the three buildings to be used without the risk that any new collapses could jeopardize the safety of passers-by.
As the mayor explains in the ordinance that restores the functionality of the buildings, "the safety requirements have not changed compared to the conditions prior to the collapse" and, based on a report from the Technical Office, "at the current time there is no state of danger for public and private safety".
In revoking the ordinance, the mayor is asking the property owners to send the authority “a certificate of static suitability signed by a qualified technician, within and no later than one year”. In the meantime, procedures are moving forward to allow the return home of the other families evacuated both in Corso Umberto I and in the nearby Vico Pizza and for the reopening of the road, which can only happen once the building affected by the collapse in which three people were injured has been made safe.
