The City of Acerra expressed a negative opinion on the renewal of the Integrated Environmental Authorization (AIA) of the waste-to-energy plant.
This position was reiterated today during the special Conference of Services reconvened by the Campania Region in light of the objections raised by the body during the previous meeting on 22 June and mainly related to the management plan for any malfunctions of the plant. The clarifications produced by A2A, the mixed public-private company that manages the plant owned by the Campania Region, were deemed "not exhaustive since they do not remove the critical issues reported, thus limiting themselves to theoretical statements without going into the merits of the issue". According to the mayor of Acerra, Tito D'Errico, "that the environmental issue must be the subject of further investigation is demonstrated by the fact that the Campania Region has recently established by law the environmental observatory on the waste-to-energy plant and a commission of experts to evaluate environmental pollution and its possible impact on public health".
The Conference of Services for the renewal of the AIA ended with the favorable opinion of the entities involved except for the negative one expressed by the Municipality of Acerra. In relation to the environmental issue, furthermore, the mayor announced the participation of the municipal administration in the demonstration against the feared construction of the fourth line of the waste-to-energy plant organized by the 'Unitary Committee against the fourth line' and scheduled for next October 14. "We will continue to reiterate and propose in the appropriate venues all the necessary initiatives to counter, with all in our power, the worsening of the environmental burden in the city to improve the quality of the environment and the health of citizens", added the mayor of Acerra.
