The Carabinieri of the Roma Aventino Station have arrested a 33 year old Napoli in execution of a custodial remand order issued last October 13 by the GIP of the Court of Rome, seriously suspected of the crime of extortion against an elderly woman.
On November 7, 2022, an 87-year-old woman from Rome reported that she had been forced to hand over 8.000 euros in cash and jewelry, worth approximately 10.000 euros, to a man who had shown up at her home following a phone call from a self-styled lawyer who informed her of her daughter's involvement in a serious accident. In order to avoid further consequences and as compensation, the frightened woman had handed over the goods in her possession.
Realizing she had been scammed, the elderly woman filed a complaint and the Carabinieri of the Roma Aventino Station launched an investigation, coordinated by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office. The military carried out a thorough inspection of the 87-year-old's home, which allowed them to collect numerous fingerprints that led to the identification of the 33-year-old, already known for previous crimes.
The man was also recognized by the victim during the photographic identification phase. The serious evidence collected against the man led to the issuance of the provision by the Judicial Authority. Last morning, the Carabinieri of the Roma Aventino Station tracked down the suspect at his home in Naples and arrested him, later associating him in the prison of "Napoli - Poggioreale".
It should be noted that the proceeding is in the preliminary investigation phase, therefore the suspect is to be considered innocent until a final sentence is reached.
