This morning a meeting was held at Palazzo Santa Lucia between the bishop of Acerra, Monsignor Giuseppe Di Donna, and the President of the Region, Vincenzo De Luca.
The meeting focused on a careful evaluation of the environmental situation of the Acerra area and the problems related to waste-to-energy plant.President De Luca announced that the Region will immediately launch a transparency operation, starting with the actual health data relating to the territory in question. Health protection and complete and transparent information to citizens are considered essential.
To this end, a timely and continuous update of epidemiological data will be initiated, with the collaboration of national scientific and health authorities. In this context, the Region will suspend any decision regarding the waste-to-energy plant and the fourth line hypothesis, initiating a detailed and updated survey of waste disposal programs.
"It is clear to everyone that every treatment plant, starting with the waste-to-energy plant, requires a necessary maintenance program. It would be irresponsible to find ourselves with blocked plants and mountains of waste on the streets without having taken preventive action. We cannot even imagine plunging the region into a new waste emergency. However, this must not mean an increase in the quantities of waste treated in the plants.
We are facing a problem that requires the responsibility of all institutions and citizens. It is necessary to verify in detail, before proceeding, how much this problem can be solved with an increase - always desirable - of separate waste collection and with the progressive entry into operation of the composting plants under construction", the note highlights.
The President announced that “the regional offices will be instructed not to authorize the installation of new waste treatment plants in an area where a large quantity of such plants already exist, taking into account the parameters already approved by the Region for the classification of saturated areas.
A control action will also be started on the existing plants to verify compliance with environmental protection regulations. Finally, it was decided to establish a committee of experts with territorial, scientific and third-party representatives, in order to examine all future programs and decisions in a climate of total transparency and collaboration".

It seems like a good initiative to address the issues related to the waste-to-energy plant and waste management.
