The plate ceremony in San Cipriano Picentino: an ancient rite revisited.
On March 8, at the Politeama in San Cipriano Picentino, “a 'ncenziat” will be revived, the plate ceremony, an ancient wedding reception rite rooted in local tradition until the 90s.
This ancient ritual, of Greek and Roman origin, has been maintained over time and in 2019 gave life to a re-enactment show during the Chestnut Festival. This propitiatory rite, practiced since Roman times, celebrated the union of the spouses with the aim of ensuring happiness and prosperity to the new family.
The bride, welcomed at the entrance of the marital home together with the groom, was welcomed by her mother-in-law with a plate containing burning embers and scented essences, a symbol of well-being and good luck for the new life together. The show “a 'ncenziat” draws inspiration from historical, philological and anthropological studies, and will be staged under the direction of Antonello De Rosa, enriching the existing dramaturgy with suggestions taken from works such as “A Midsummer Night's Dream” and “La Lupa”.
The appointment is for 20:30 pm on March 8 at the Politeama in San Cipriano Picentino, as part of the POC Campania project: “PIC – Picentini Itinerari Comuni”.
