A high-speed chase kept the Cassino Highway Patrol on tenterhooks, as they managed to stop a 32-year-old from Mugnano di Napoli after a dramatic accident on the Sr630 Cassino – Mare. It all started on the A1 motorway and turned into a reckless race that saw the driver desperately trying to escape capture.
The standoff began when a patrol ordered a Peugeot to stop, which in the middle of the night was traveling south at a speed well above the speed limit, set at 130 kilometers per hour. Ignoring the order to stop, the driver instead accelerated in an attempt to lose the officers.
In his desperate attempt to escape, the driver took the exit ramp to Cassino and crashed through the toll booth barrier, bursting onto the highway. However, his escape was abruptly interrupted at Pignataro Interamna, where a roundabout was recently installed to reduce speed on that stretch of road, which is otherwise dangerously fast.
Just as the roundabout was approaching, the Peugeot lost control, skidding and crashing first into a concrete traffic island and then into a wall, suffering catastrophic damage. The officers, led by Deputy Police Commissioner Stefano Macarra, immediately stopped the driver and had him assisted by the 118 medical personnel who had intervened at the scene of the accident. Subsequently, the 32-year-old was taken to the barracks, where he was detained and placed at the disposal of the deputy prosecutor on duty in Cassino for the necessary investigations.
