This morning, at the county jail of Poggioreale, Napoli, an operation was conducted to combat the introduction of drugs and narcotic substances.
The action was carried out by the staff of Penitentiary Police, coordinated by the deputy commander of the department, Savina D'Ambrosio, with the support of the canine units and the dog Spike.During the operation, 125 grams of hashish were seized in the Livorno 50 pavilion, some of which had already been divided into doses and hidden inside stick deodorants, while a complete block had been hidden inside a dove.
A round of applause to the staff of Napoli Poggioreale which, despite serious overcrowding and staff shortages, continues to guarantee legality. The operation was made public by the regional secretary for Campania of the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police, Tiziana Guacci.
“The problem of drugs entering prison is increasingly frequent – explains Donato Capece, general secretary Know – due to the growing number of drug addicts held in Italian facilities. From the data available to us, it appears that almost 30% of people detained in Italy, both Italian and foreign, that is, one in three, have drug problems.
It is important to emphasize that these people are in prison for having committed various crimes and not for their condition of drug addiction. Their presence involves significant challenges both for management within an already problematic environment, and for the complexity of treating this pathology.
It is clear that those suffering from drug addiction must receive appropriate treatment outside of prison, and there are legal provisions that allow this intervention. This could be the solution to reduce the entry of drugs into prison, together with all the preventive activities, such as the use of canine units that are essential in countering illicit and fraudulent attempts to introduce and sell drugs into prison”.
