A unique opportunity to get closer to the world of archaeology with exclusive visits and excavation campaigns. This is what the FAI – Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano ETS offers during the “European Archaeology Days”, scheduled for 14 to 16 June 2024. The initiative, managed by Inrap (Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives) and organized in Italy by the Ministry of Culture, allows visitors to participate in guided tours with experts, activities for children and adults, and conferences with specialists, in collaboration with Universities and Superintendencies.
Seven FAI archaeological properties will be the protagonists of numerous initiatives: the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate in Lecce, the Abbey of San Fruttuoso in Camogli, the Villa Gregoriana Park in Tivoli, the Bay of Ieranto in Massa Lubrense, the Garden of Kolymbethra in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the Monastery of Torba in Gornate Olona and Casa Noha in Matera. These sites represent a cross-section of Italian history and allow a journey along the peninsula to discover different eras, uses and customs. Exceptionally, some areas not open to visitors will be opened to reveal recent discoveries.
The Bay of Ieranto in Massa Lubrense will offer events in collaboration with Archeoclub d'Italia APS. The focus will be on the control and protection of the territories of the Lubrense coast and the Gulf of Naples, exploring visual communication systems from Roman times to the modern age. On Saturday, June 15, there will be a guided tour of the inlet and the Crapolla Abbey, with a meeting at Largo San Ludovico da Casoria in S. Agata sui due Golfi. On Sunday, June 16, there will be a special guided tour of the Bay of Ieranto with archaeologist Riccardo Iaccarino, exploring the theme of communication between the anti-pirate watchtowers and experimenting with ancient code systems.
The FAI continues to promote studies and research archaeological, offering events that reveal hidden aspects of cultural heritage. The Ieranto Bay, donated to FAI by Italsider in 1987, represents one of the treasures of this initiative. The calendar of events “Events in FAI Properties 2024” is made possible thanks to the support of Ferrarelle, partner of institutional events and official water of FAI, as well as the contribution of Pirelli and Delicius, who confirm their support for the project.
