“When we talk about Torre del Greco and try to give it a negative and clearly anti-Southern connotation, we should know that Torre del Greco is nestled between the sea of the Gulf of Naples and the protected areas of the Vesuvius National Park.
It is the world home of coral and cameo processing, home of the first people's credit bank, a city made strong by the vocation of its maritime workers. It hosted one of the greatest Italian poets, Giacomo Leopardi, and was the residence of the first President of the Republic, Enrico De Nicola.
It has seen the birth and affirmation of exponents of Italian culture known throughout the world. In short, it is a land of strong and determined people, who cannot silently accept the provocations of those who try to throw mud on their history to obtain a handful of preferences".
The one speaking is the mayor of Torre del Greco, Luigi Mennella. The mayor is holding an electoral flyer that is currently circulating in Florence to promote the electoral campaign of the center-right candidate for mayor, Eike Schmidt, and of the civic list that bears his name.
The flyer, entitled “More trees, fewer poles”, reads among other things “Florence is not Torre del Greco” (here considered an obvious reference to the outgoing mayor Dario Nardella, originally from the Vesuvian city, ed.).
Mennella continues: “It is even more surprising that this squalid propaganda comes from someone like Schmidt, who should know our area well, having held the position of director of the Museum and Royal Wood of Capodimonte in Naples since the beginning of the year. He, born in Germany, declared upon his installation in Capodimonte: 'Arriving, I turned to admire the Gulf of Naples and my heart swelled as always when I come to this wonderful city'”.
“Personally, I avoid any kind of comparison: Torre del Greco is extraordinary, as extraordinary is Florence, a city that I will never tire of visiting and to which I always return with extreme pleasure.
Mayor Mennella: “I hope that the citizens of Florence will continue the excellent work done by Nardella”
A city that attracts millions of tourists every year and offers excellent hospitality services, a sign of the work carried out by the municipal administrations, the latest of which led by our fellow citizen Dario Nardella.
I like to think that citizens will want to give continuity to this work and I am sure that they will not choose those who suddenly change their opinion according to personal convenience".
