Naples. Professor Luigi Califano, professor of medicine and surgery at Federico II University, has passed away suddenly. The University expresses its grief in a statement from Rector Matteo Lorito.

“It is with great sorrow that I must unfortunately communicate the sudden death of Professor Luigi Califano. The entire University gathers around Luigi's family. We are all shocked and incredulous at this enormous and unbridgeable loss, not only for Federico II but also for the city, for the scientific community.

Luigi and I have been meeting regularly for several years and collaborating for the good of our University and its beloved School of Medicine and Surgery, of which he was President, with always pleasant meetings. We lose a colleague who was highly appreciated for his commitment and his great generosity, as well as a professor adored by students and by many colleagues and collaborators.

This loss catapults us into a human and academic drama for which we were not prepared. I send on behalf of the entire Community federiciana a hug to all his relatives and to all those who knew him and appreciated his extraordinary professional and human qualities".
