The number of places available for degree courses in health professions in Italy is growing. For the next academic year, the announcements foresee approximately 35.900 places for future nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and, for the first time, osteopaths. This is an increase of 3,9% compared to the 34.450 places of the previous year.
With the entrance exam set for September 5th at the 41 state universities, the month of August is the deadline for submitting applications. The deadline has already passed for 22 universities, including La Sapienza in Rome. The next deadlines concern, among others, the University of Milan Bicocca, Brescia, Padua, Genoa, Naples Federico II, Florence and Bari, with dates between August 27th and 31st.
Angelo Mastrillo, professor of Organization of Health Professions at the University of Bologna, underlines how even private universities, such as the Catholic University, have increased the available places, with 845 places on 12 courses distributed in different regions. The attractiveness of these courses is high, especially for some professions.
In 2023, the ratio of applications to vacancies was particularly high for physiotherapists (6,8), speech therapists (4,7), midwives (4,3) and dieticians (3,7). The nursing sector was less competitive, with 20.000 vacancies offered, with a ratio of 1,1 applications per vacancy. The employment future for those who choose these professions is very promising. According to data from AlmaLaurea, the employment rate for graduates in healthcare professions is 77%, almost double the national average for other disciplinary areas.
