Originally scheduled for June of this year, the trial had already been postponed for the first time to October 1, 2023, but will now be postponed once again. The defendants are accused of “potential negligence” that would have led to the death of the legendary Argentine footballer. Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, from a cardio-respiratory crisis, while he was recovering in a residence in Tigre, following neurosurgery to remove a hematoma on his head.
The eight defendants include the attending physician (a neurosurgeon), a clinical physician, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a head nurse, and several nurses. All are facing charges of medical negligence, a crime that carries a prison sentence of eight to 8 years.
One of the nurses involved, Gisela Madrid, had requested to be judged separately and by a popular jury, claiming that she had only followed the doctors' instructions. However, the courts rejected this request and confirmed the start of the collective trial.
The San Isidro court had already confirmed twice, in 2022 and on appeal in March 2023, the opening of the trial for the medical team that was treating him Maradona, accused of failing to provide adequate care to the champion. This postponement represents a further delay in the search for justice for the death of a world icon, leaving many questions still open about the management of the Argentine champion's health in the last days of his life.
