On 5 and 6 October, the University Campus of San Giovanni a Teduccio will be transformed into a hub of space innovation, hosting the NASA Space Apps Challenge.

This global event, now in its 2024 edition, invites participants from around the world to test their skills and develop creative solutions to the most pressing challenges facing our planet and deep space.

Tackle 20 global challenges from NASA, using real-world data and cutting-edge tools.

The goal is to propose innovative ideas and solutions to the 20 global challenges selected by NASA for life on Earth and in space, using data made available by NASA, the American space agency, and partner space agencies.

The NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024 hackathon is organized by the Consulate General of the United States of America in Naples and the Campania Aerospace District – DAC, in collaboration with the Center for Near Space of the Italian Institute for the Future, the Department of Industrial Engineering of the Federico II University, the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment of the CNR, and the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory of the INAF. To participate in the hackathon, registration is required at the link https://www.spaceappschallenge.org, choosing the Local Event of Naples.

It is already possible to register your project team once you have selected one of the 20 challenges identified by NASA.

NASA Space Apps provides a platform for problem solvers around the world to use free and open data from NASA and its partners. NASA Space Apps Challenge teams use these resources to solve challenges written by NASA experts, covering topics ranging from storytelling to software development, astrophysics, space exploration, and more.

Every year, thousands of teams submit projects that demonstrate creativity, collaboration, and the potential to solve challenges on Earth and in space. Projects go through multiple rounds of judging to first determine local winners, who then qualify to be selected as global winners of the NASA International Space Apps Challenge.

600 cities around the world are participating in this edition. In Italy, Naples, Rome, Teramo, Turin and Venice are participating. On October 3, the local bootcamp will be held for participants at the INAF, Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory with a program that also includes stargazing.

Speakers will include Pietro Schipani, Director of the Capodimonte Observatory, Tracy Roberts-Pounds, Consul General of the United States in Naples, Luigi Carrino, President of the DAC, and Dr. John Mankins, Vice President of the Moon Village Association and former Director of NASA's Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology. The Campania Region Councilor for Research and Innovation, Valeria Fascione, has been invited to participate.
