The situation in the prison of Secondigliano it erupted into a violent brawl between inmates, forcing officers to intervene and resulting in injuries.
SAPPE regional secretary Tiziana Guacci blames the closure of the Pozzuoli prison, arguing that the decision was hasty and caused dangerous overcrowding in Secondigliano.
A new episode of violence has shaken the Secondigliano prison. In the early hours of the morning, a fight between a group of inmates sent the penitentiary into a panic. The prison police officers had to intervene to quell the riot, resulting in several injuries.
According to a complaint by the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police SAPPE, the cause of this escalation of tension is to be found in the closure of the women's prison in Pozzuoli, which occurred approximately four months ago.
The inmates transferred to Secondigliano would have thus aggravated an already existing problem of overcrowding, creating an increasingly palpable climate of tension.
Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary of SAPPE for Campania, expressed her deep concern about the situation: “The closure of Pozzuoli was a hasty and unmotivated decision.
We had already reported the risks of such a massive transfer of prisoners in May, but our concerns were ignored. Now we are paying the consequences of this reckless choice.”
Guacci also underlined how the phenomenon of bradyseism, invoked as a reason for the closure of Pozzuoli, did not justify such a drastic and sudden decision.
“The available scientific data showed that the situation was not so critical as to require a mass transfer of prisoners. It was possible to act in a more gradual and planned way, avoiding creating a hotbed of tension like the one we are experiencing today in Secondigliano.”
This morning's brawl is the latest in a series of incidents that demonstrate how the situation inside the Neapolitan prison has become unsustainable. The prison police officers, already worn out by an excessive workload, find themselves operating in increasingly difficult conditions, exposed to continuous risks for their safety.
SAPPE urgently calls for a decisive intervention by the institutions to resolve this emergency. It is necessary to find a rapid and lasting solution to the problem of overcrowding, while ensuring the safety of the officers and the inmates.
