Officers from the Naples Flying Squad, Foreign Organized Crime unit, along with staff from the Scampia Police Station, arrested Orhan Jashar. He had been on the run since July and was found inside the Roma camp located on Via Cupa Perillo, in the Scampia neighborhood, thanks to a targeted stakeout.
Orhan was wanted for being part of a criminal organization that illegally managed a landfill inside a nomad camp in Scampia. The organization, composed mainly of people of Roma ethnicity, had transformed the camp into an illegal landfill, dumping tons of waste, including special waste, from private individuals and local companies.
This waste was then burned in the open, causing serious environmental pollution and endangering the health of residents, especially those of two nearby schools. The investigations, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office and the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, revealed that the organization had been active since 2017 and that its members had committed numerous crimes, including criminal association, illicit waste trafficking, illicit combustion and aggravated theft.
Orhan and his accomplices were sentenced in the first instance to sentences ranging from 3 years and 8 months to 8 years of imprisonment. The man, in particular, had evaded the house arrest to which he had previously been subjected, thus worsening his position.
The police operation allowed to dismantle a dangerous criminal organization and to clean up a heavily polluted area. The investigations are continuing to identify any other responsible parties.
