The crime took place in Cerreto d'Esi, in the province of Ancona. Concetta Marruocco, a 53-year-old nurse, had reported years of mistreatment suffered by both her and her daughter and had testified in court on September 13, 2023, recounting the abuses she had experienced during almost 20 years of marriage.
Despite the prohibition on approach, the device did not work properly on the day of the murder. Panariello, defended by the lawyer Ruggero Benvenuto, made spontaneous statements in court, stating that he had never beaten his wife or his children and maintaining that he had always loved Concetta.
He also blamed the tragedy on financial problems, citing a loss of €300.000 in his business importing furniture from France, and said he had been the victim of lies and humiliation. The defense announced it would appeal, arguing that key elements of the case had not been adequately considered.
