An atmosphere of fear and uncertainty enveloped the quiet Piazza Umberto I in Calvizzano this morning. Around [hours], some passers-by, alarmed by an object abandoned on a bench, immediately alerted the police.
Several patrols of the Carabinieri of Marano di Napoli arrived on the scene, promptly cordoning off the area and ordering the evacuation of part of the square. The suspicious object, an old handset telephone next to a portable radio, was accompanied by some handwritten sheets of paper with threatening writings that alluded to the presence of an explosive device.
The alarm mobilized units specialized in the detection and disarming of explosive devices, who went to the site with cutting-edge equipment. For several hours, the technicians worked with the utmost caution to analyze the suspicious object and the papers found.
The mayor of Calvizzano, Giacomo Pirozzi, went to the site to closely follow the operations and reassure the citizens. "I wanted to be there to testify the closeness of the municipal administration to the citizens in this moment of concern. I thank the police forces for their timely intervention and the professionalism demonstrated", declared the mayor.
Fortunately, after hours of tension, the long-awaited news arrived: it was a false alarm. The suspicious object and the papers did not hide any danger. Despite the general relief, the episode leaves a bitter feeling and raises questions about the safety of the community.
Investigations are underway to track down the perpetrator or perpetrators of this irresponsible act. “Whoever committed this act endangered the safety of citizens and caused unnecessary alarm. We will not tolerate such behavior,” said Mayor Pirozzi.
