Naples. It is official, among the new cardinals who will be named during the Consistory of December 7, there will also be Monsignor Domenico Battaglia, the current archbishop of Naples. The announcement was given by the Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, thus confirming the inclusion of Battaglia in the list of those chosen by the Holy Father.
With this appointment, the total number of cardinals to be created will be restored to 21, despite the recent resignation of Indonesian bishop Syukur, who decided to renounce the purple “to continue to grow as a priest,” as reported by the Vatican itself.
The choice of Monsignor Battaglia, known as Don Mimmo, was well received, especially for his great commitment to the most vulnerable and needy people. With this appointment, the number of Italian bishops chosen to become cardinals next December rises to five.
Alongside Battaglia, there will also be the 99-year-old former nuncio Angelo Acerbi, who, due to his age, will not have the right to vote in a future Conclave; Monsignor Roberto Repole, archbishop of Turin; the vicar of Rome, Baldo Reina; and Father Fabio Baggio, undersecretary for Integral Human Development.
These appointments underline the Pope's attention to the promotion of ecclesiastical figures who have demonstrated particular dedication in the service of the Church and of the neediest people.
The Consistory of December 7 promises to be a significant moment for the universal Church, strengthening Pope Francis's ongoing commitment to a more inclusive Church, attentive to the existential peripheries.
