The city of Naples is grappling with an increasingly serious problem: growing violence among young people. The Juvenile Prosecutor, Maria De Luzenberger, has sounded the alarm, underlining how the easy accessibility of firearms and a deeply rooted culture of violence are shaping a generation of increasingly aggressive kids.
"We have been doing prevention work in schools with social services for years, the results of which are probably still to come. There is the issue of the excessive circulation of firearms. The issue of a violent culture that concerns not only young Neapolitans but a bit everyone because episodes of violence are happening a bit all over Italy".
De Luzenberger talks about “a generation that grew up violent. On the internet, kids have access to violent content, even violent sex, without control. In addition, in these territories there is a culture of Camorra.
There is a whole grey area of kids, even very young ones, who are not necessarily involved in the Camorra, nor are they the children of people involved with it, but they breathe a climate of violence, they live in a culture of oppression which is the only one that gives them visibility in some way".
To those who ask about the 17 year old arrested for the murder of Holy Roman previously incarcerated in Nisida, De Luzenberger responded: “the problem is the support once you leave the penal circuit. Support that is currently lacking”.
“At this time – explained the Prosecutor – there is also a problem within juvenile penitentiaries that does not allow full recovery activities. This is a topic that I have also addressed with regard to the penitentiaries of Nisida and Airola.
There are many problems. They are not necessarily linked to the increase in incarcerations. The crime reports are actually quite stable: there is no increase in crimes but there is an increase in the seriousness of the facts involving minors”.
