Salerno. A large fire hit the Salerno Pulita composting plant in the industrial area during the night. The flames engulfed a warehouse of about 5 thousand square meters used for the second phase of compost maturation, fortunately without machinery.

According to Salerno Pulita, the fire, probably caused by spontaneous combustion, caused significant damage to the structure but did not affect other areas of the plant. The firefighters, who intervened promptly, are still working to put out the last outbreaks and carry out the usual surveys.

“The plant will remain closed for at least three weeks,” said Vincenzo Bennet, sole director of Salerno Pulita, “but we are working to restore operations as quickly as possible.” The Carabinieri investigations, supported by video surveillance images, will try to clarify the exact dynamics of the fire.

The administrator of Salerno Pulita: "The last section of the wet waste processing, the drying section, caught fire. In this area temperatures can reach up to 60 degrees, so we cannot rule out the possibility of spontaneous combustion. In any case, the firefighters are examining the video surveillance images."
