The brutal beating that cost the life of Willy Monteiro Duarte has been defined as an “indecent event” for its manner and motivation by the deputy attorney general of Rome, who has requested a life sentence for Gabriele and Marco Bianchi.

Article Key Points

The two brothers of Artena (Frosinone) were part of the pack that, in September 2020, in Colleferro, beat to death the 21-year-old of Cape Verdean origins. The request came during the second appeal trial, ordered by the Court of Cassation to re-examine the recognition of mitigating circumstances, while confirming the criminal responsibility for murder already established. In the first appeal, the two defendants had been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

During the closing argument, the prosecution reconstructed those dramatic fifty seconds of violence: Gabriele Bianchi, a martial arts expert, allegedly started the beating with a violent kick to Willy's chest, followed immediately by Marco Bianchi. Both allegedly played a major role in the attack. Despite the time that had passed, according to the prosecutor, the brothers did not show any critical review of their actions.

The other final sentences

In addition to the Bianchi brothers, already detained in Rebibbia and Pescara prison, the other members of the gang also received definitive sentences: Francesco Belleggia at 23 years and Mario Pincarelli at 21 years. Both actively participated in the attack, kicking and punching Willy, already helpless on the ground, and contributing to his death.

The attack took place outside a pub. According to witnesses, the four got out of a car and attacked with unheard-of violence anyone who came within range. Willy was the main victim, but Samuele Cenciarelli, who tried to defend him, also risked losing his life. Biological traces of Cenciarelli were found on Belleggia's shoe, testifying to the ferocity of that night.

The Court of Cassation, accepting the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office last April, had judged the motivations of the first appeal trial, which had reduced the sentences of the Bianchi brothers from life imprisonment to 24 years, to be "contradictory" and "lacking". The supreme judges had also contested the reference to "media hype" as an element to attenuate the evaluation of the defendants' personality.

That night, the prosecution emphasizes, anyone who had been in the square could have met the same fate as Willy. The blows inflicted were technical, violent and aimed at causing very serious damage. A ferocity that leaves an indelible mark on the collective memory and that demands justice for a young life cut short.
