Ua patrol boat of the Naples Naval Air Operations Department, in service as part of economic and financial police checks, intercepted a pleasure craft in the waters in front of the Municipality of Torre del Greco.
Specimens of swordfish below the minimum size allowed for fishing were found on board the vessel.
According to current legislation, swordfish cannot be caught if they are less than 125 centimeters long or weigh less than 25 kilograms. In this specific case, the seven specimens seized were less than 50 centimeters long and weighed just 30 kilograms in total.
This practice causes significant damage to marine fauna, considering that an adult swordfish can weigh more than three quintals.
The authorities proceeded to seize the fishing equipment and the catch, imposing an administrative fine of 16.000 euros on the person responsible, a resident of the area.
The catch, after having been subjected to health checks by theASL Napoli 1 Center, which verified its suitability for human consumption, was donated to charity to a local parish. The facility welcomes needy and homeless people on a daily basis, offering them hot meals and assistance.
