Tonight in Naples, starting at 19:30 pm, a silent torchlight procession will be held to demand justice for the camel that died after escaping from the Togni circus. The demonstration will take place in Fuorigrotta, at the entrance to the circus on Viale dei Giochi del Mediterraneo.

On Saturday, the animal was spotted wandering the street among cars, before being found in the Agnano area and brought back to the facility from which it had escaped.

"While waiting for the autopsy tests that will have to, and we demand it, clarify the causes of death, we must make our voices heard so that similar episodes never happen again. The only way for this to happen is to ban circus shows that involve the presence of animals."

Thus in a joint note the deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli and the regional councilor Roberta Gaeta who add: “These innocent beings, used and exploited for the pure entertainment of the public, very often live in alarming conditions that put their own health at risk, especially when it comes to animals whose DNA has the ability to live in very different places, with very different climates and in conditions opposite to those of a cage.

Their presence in circuses is harmful for them but also for the public, let's remember for example the episode of the lions in Licola, of the elephants in Afragola, of the other lion in Ladispoli, just to mention a few examples.

We have more than three clues and yet for many these are still not enough to prove it when instead it is clear that urban life is not compatible with the presence of exotic and wild animals, that certain shows are now anachronistic, degrading and humiliating, that respect for every living being should be an automatic attitude in our times and instead there is still a need to resort to cries of alarm".

For years, Borrelli and Gaeta recall, we have been waiting for the competent Ministry to implement the rule that provides for the gradual decommissioning of animals in circuses. “So – they conclude – let's say for the umpteenth time enough with circuses with animals in all the appropriate locations, we will not let ourselves be tamed by the whips of those who, in positions of command and institutional, look at the lives of animals as second-class lives”.

I read the article and it seems to me that demonstrations for justice are important. However, I do not know if completely banning circus shows is the best solution, perhaps there would be alternatives to improve the conditions of the animals.
