Tonight, Piazza Municipio in Naples, Via del Santo and Piazza delle Erbe in Padua, as well as Piazza Santa Giulia in Turin, received a new name in honor of Patrizio Spasiano, who tragically passed away at just 19 years old due to an accident at work.
The initiative was promoted by the students of the Collettivi Autorganizzati Universitari (CAU), who declared in a press release: “The name of will continue to live on in the streets of our city. Patrizio Spasiano, who was killed on the job last January 10th by an ammonia leak […] We will not allow a boy like us, who was building his own future, to be forgotten. We support the appeal of Patrizio's family: we want truth and justice”.
Symbolic demonstrations
The renaming of the squares was accompanied by a series of symbolic demonstrations, including the presence of banners titled “Silence = complicity. Institutions complicit with those who kill in the workplace. Truth and justice for Patrizio Spasiano”, displayed during the night in front of the City Hall of Naples, the Mole Antonelliana in Turin and the Basilica of Sant'Antonio in Padua.
Demands for Justice
“The institutions continue to remain silent in the face of the death of Patrizio Spasiano. The Government and opposition forces have not spent a word on the incident, the Mayor of Naples has not even deigned to send a letter of condolence.
It is clear to everyone that for the institutions of this country, young people from the suburbs who go to work and are exploited for €500 a month are considered 'second-class' citizens whose death is not worthy of attention", the students denounced.
The student movement concluded the statement by launching a message of solidarity: “We are ready to fight alongside you. We are ready to defend the dignity of Patrizio and all those young people who sacrifice themselves to build their future and realize their dreams. We will not allow attention to this story to decline: we do not forget, we do not forgive. Truth and justice for Patrizio and for all of us”.
