Vatican City – An ovation from over 150 faithful welcomed Pope Leo XIV from the central Loggia of Blessings for the recitation of his first Regina Coeli. The Pontiff, with a heartfelt appeal, raised his voice against the conflicts that bloody the world, calling for a “just peace” for Ukraine and an immediate “ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.
“Never again war!” thundered Leo XIV, looking at the cheering crowd that filled St. Peter’s Square. His words, full of pain and hope, resonated powerfully, underlining the urgency of putting an end to the suffering of civilian populations involved in conflicts.
Before reciting the Marian prayer that replaces the Angelus during the Easter period, the Pontiff addressed himself in particular to young people, encouraging them not to be afraid to respond to the call of vocation. “Do not be afraid, accept the vocation,” exhorted Leo XIV, eliciting thunderous applause from the square.
There was no shortage of affectionate thoughts for mothers, on this Sunday dedicated to them. The Pontiff expressed his most sincere wishes to all mothers in the world, recognizing their fundamental role in the family and in society.
The affection and enthusiasm of the faithful were palpable throughout the ceremony. At the end of the blessing, the unanimous cry of “Long live the Pope!” was raised, accompanied by a long and warm applause, testifying to the joy and hope aroused by the beginning of the new pontificate of Leo XIV. His first public words traced a clear line, in the name of peace, hope for young people and closeness to the suffering of the world.
