Naples – Over 20.000 counterfeit items, including shirts, scarves, caps and other gadgets bearing the logo of SSC Napoli and its stars, were seized by the military of the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Naples during an operation aimed at combating counterfeiting and illegal trade.
The checks were concentrated in Via Toledo and in the Spanish Quarters, central areas with a high tourist influx.
Eighteen people were reported for counterfeiting, receiving stolen goods and commercial fraud. The total value of the illegal material, which also included flags and banners inciting the Italian team, is estimated at over 300.000 euros.
Among the most sensational cases, that of a 71-year-old with a criminal record, reported by the “Baschi Verdi” of the Pronto Impiego Group of Naples. The man had set up a real “counterfeit market” at the foot of the famous murals dedicated to Diego Armando Maradona, the beating heart of Neapolitan football fans in the Spanish Quarters.
In his stand, without any authorization, over 4.000 fake items depicting symbols of Naples, the Argentine national team and the "Pibe de oro" were seized. The poor quality items were sold for up to 50 euros each, taking advantage of the high presence of tourists and fans.
