Naples – Damage during childbirth: the Naples prosecutor's office is investigating the case of a baby girl born on May 11 at the Secondo Policlinico hospital with serious neurological and other organ problems.
Due to complications during delivery, the baby was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. The 19-year-old mother contacted the Domenico Caliendo Foundation, established specifically to help those in need. Lawyer Francesco Petruzzi and medical examiner Luca Scognamiglio are now handling the matter.
The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a case for negligent assault against unknown persons, and the case has been assigned to Deputy Prosecutor Valentina Rametta of the "Work and Professional Negligence" section coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Antonio Ricci. Diagnostic tests performed after the birth revealed a dramatic clinical picture, characterized by severe and irreversible neurological and multi-organ damage. Indeed, the baby is in a vegetative state considered virtually irreversible.
The little girl is now admitted to Santobono Hospital, where a care and treatment program has been initiated, focusing on palliative care and symptom and pain management, "with explicit renunciation and opposition to disproportionate diagnostic or therapeutic interventions that constitute unreasonable obstinacy." This is because "the mother's firm and overriding desire to protect the little girl's dignity" is "absolute," avoiding any form of aggressive treatment.
