A batch of Tapporosso-branded Gorgonzola PDO, produced by Granarolo Spa for Centrale del Latte d'Italia at the Casalino (Novara) plant, has been recalled as a precaution due to possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was issued by Carrefour stores on August 26, 2026, and applies exclusively to 200-gram packages belonging to batch L126G22, with a minimum shelf life of September 5, 2026.
Consumers who purchased this batch are advised to carefully check the batch number and expiration date indicated on the packaging. If they match, the product should not be consumed and can be returned to the supermarket where it was purchased. To date, no public cases of listeriosis linked to this product have been reported.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium commonly found in the environment, soil, water, and plants. It can contaminate foods such as milk and dairy products, fresh and soft cheeses, cured meats, undercooked meat, smoked fish, and packaged vegetables. A critical characteristic of Listeria monocytogenes is its ability to survive and multiply even at low refrigerator temperatures, making ready-to-eat, uncooked foods particularly risky.
Listeria infection, known as listeriosis, can cause mild or no symptoms in healthy adults, but it poses a serious threat to the elderly, newborns, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic illnesses. In these cases, it can cause serious complications such as meningitis, sepsis, or encephalitis.
Pregnancy is another risk factor: listeriosis can cause serious complications for the fetus, including miscarriage or premature birth, even though the mother's symptoms may be mild or flu-like.
The recall of this batch of Gorgonzola underscores the importance of food safety and providing accurate information to consumers, especially regarding potentially dangerous microorganisms such as Listeria monocytogenes.
