volunteers working to put out the flames
Positano – A night of deep apprehension shook the Amalfi Coast. Around 2:00 a.m., a large and violent fire broke out in the San Pietro area of Positano, quickly devouring a large hillside of vegetation.
The flames, fanned by light winds and the rugged terrain, quickly spread to nearby homes and structures, forcing residents into the streets.
The alarm was raised promptly, mobilizing the rescue team. Several firefighting teams converged on the scene, supported in the early hours of the morning by the use of aerial equipment to attempt to contain the blaze from above.
The invaluable assistance of local volunteers and on-site personnel was also crucial in the early stages of the emergency, preventing the flames from reaching homes.
The situation is made particularly critical by the impact on traffic and safety. The intense heat and combustion have caused debris to break loose, posing a potential landslide, which spilled over onto the Strada Statale 163 "Amalfitana" highway.
For safety reasons and to facilitate the passage of emergency vehicles and firefighters, the road was temporarily closed to traffic at the affected kilometer, partially isolating connections to Praiano and paralyzing traffic in the area.
Firefighting and cleanup operations are currently underway. The precise cause of the fire remains to be determined: investigators are not ruling out any possibility, including arson, a common possibility when it comes to summer and nighttime fires that strike the green lungs of the Amalfi Coast.
