Portici, man drowned on Mortelle beach
A late summer night turned tragic on the Portici coast, at the popular Mortelle beach. A man lost his life after jumping into the waves, clearly mentally and physically impaired, stripping before entering the water.
The events unfolded in a few dramatic minutes. Noticing the extremely dangerous situation, two law enforcement officers—a local police officer and a State Police colleague—did not hesitate to jump into the sea in a desperate attempt to reach him and pull him to shore safe and sound.
Despite the immediate and courageous intervention of the two officers, braving the darkness and the dangers of the night sea, there was nothing that could be done for the victim.
When the man was found and brought back to shore, he was already unconscious; resuscitation attempts on the scene were unsuccessful. The incident is currently under investigation to determine the victim's exact identity and the exact cause of death.
