The medieval castle of Lettere is one of the sites of scientific competence of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. Located on the Lettere hill, the Castle was built by the Duchy of Amalfi during the 10th century to defend its northern borders and was part of a network of fortifications that ensured the Amalfitans control of both sides of the Lattari mountains. The site is still in a splendid panoramic position that allowed control of the area from the port of Castellammare to the mouth of the Sarno and the entire Gulf of Naples, but also the Sarno Valley dominated by Vesuvius and the Sarno mountains up to Pagani.
During the numerous excavations conducted at the castle and its village, pottery and animal bones were found, which allow us to reconstruct the diet of the villagers in the 1528th century, as well as iron finds, including some spearheads used in the castle. The finds are now exhibited in a museum itinerary, which tells the story of life in the castle in the Middle Ages. The layout of the rooms consisting of the historical reconstruction of XNUMX, with reproduced finds from the XNUMXth century was created by the Municipality of Lettere, with the scientific supervision of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
The publication of the Guide is an integral part of a valorization process undertaken since the establishment of the Archaeological Park of the Castle of Lettere and the result of the memorandum of understanding between the municipal administration and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii in October 2018.
“The Castello di Lettere, among the sites under the scientific competence of the Park, is with its museum itinerary an example of how the Institutions are able to carry out projects of enhancement and fruition through close collaboration, within the scope of their respective competences. – declares the General Director of the Archaeological Park Gabriel Zuchtriegel – The guide completes this enhancement process, providing historical scientific information and images that enhance its landscape and architectural characteristics.”
"The awareness of the territorial and cultural attractiveness, and of the consequent intrinsic potential that the Medieval Site has in the territory, has triggered significant attention towards the need to create strategic plans for development and promotion through interventions that favor the increase of quality tourism. Since the beginning of the establishment of the Archaeological Park of the Castle of Lettere, every initiative undertaken has been aimed not only at the protection and enhancement of the Site, but above all at the dissemination of the social and aggregative role that it has for the local populations.
Every effort undertaken in these years has had the objective of implementing and highlighting this peculiarity, reconstructing and rediscovering the relationship between the Castle and the territory, a true point of reference, of aggregation and belonging for an entire community, which goes beyond local borders, and looks with renewed interest to the entire Sarno valley up to the entire Mediterranean basin. – declares the architect Paola Marzullo, director of the Archaeological Park of the Castle of Lettere.”
“Since 2014, with the functional adaptation project of the Monumental Site, the Municipal Administration has invested significantly and primarily in economic and human resources in the relaunch of what has become the Archaeological Park of the Castle of Lettere. The relationship established between the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and the Municipality of Lettere has favored the birth of an intense technical-scientific collaboration aimed at implementing a common policy of use and enhancement of the Monumental Site, retracing its historical vocation as a territorial and urban reference that it has had since the origin of its construction.
The publication of the Guide to the Castle of Lettere represents the synthesis of the promotional and valorization activities undertaken so far by the municipal administration of Lettere, the most important tool for disseminating the traditions and customs of the territory.” declares the Mayor of Lettere, lawyer Sebastiano Giordano
