Salerno, inmate attacks prison officer and then dies of heart attack in hospital. Uspp, psychiatric prisoners removed from institutions
An inmate in solitary confinement in Salerno prison, suffering from psychiatric problems, died in the city hospital where he had been taken after being the protagonist of an attack with a rudimentary knife against a Penitentiary Police officer.
The Union of Penitentiary Police Unions (Uspp) announced this. According to the national secretary of the union Giuseppe Del Sorbo, the man had suffered a heart attack. Unfortunately, the intervention of the paramedics was of no avail.
The attacked officer also ended up in the emergency room, where doctors diagnosed him with a head injury.
“There are too many psychiatric inmates inside prisons, – Del Sorbo and Giuseppe Moretti, president of the Uspp, claim – we have already reported it to the minister, in the last protest in Rome. This latest episode in Salerno demonstrates – the two unionists add – that the closure of the OPGs has destabilized the ordinary penitentiary circuit.
There are few support tools for these individuals who should be taken care of by the regional health system. Instead – they underline – they remain in prison, weighing on the work of the penitentiary police, which in Salerno is short of 40 units”.
Finally, Del Sorbo and Moretti ask the top management of the penitentiary administration, “the sending of a permanent deputy director and a department commander".
The inmate who died of a heart attack in the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi D'Aragona hospital in Salerno was Italian and 50 years old, where another officer is currently hospitalized, in addition to a policeman already under observation for a serious head trauma suffered during the fight.
The second officer has several stab wounds to his hand that he suffered while trying to disarm the psychiatric prisoner who attacked the two representatives of the police force with a rudimentary knife. Solidarity towards the two injured officers was expressed by the regional secretary for Campania of the Uspp Ciro Auricchio
