Sant'Egidio. A criminal association dedicated to extortion has been dismantled by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Salerno who arrested eight people believed by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate to belong to the Camorra group operating in Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino and the surrounding municipalities, called “I Zi Maist -Quelli di San Lorenzo”, historically led by the Iannaco-Sorrentino criminal family.
A total of six precautionary measures were carried out in prison, against Gennaro Alfano, Gaetano Attianese, Raffaele Maiorino, Giuseppe Malvone, Eliodoro Nicosia and Ferdinando Trapani, and two house arrests notified by the military to Gianluca Attianese (already detained) and Marco Sorrentino. The investigators contest, to varying degrees, mafia-type criminal association, extortion, illegal possession and carrying of common firearms and explosives and other crimes, mostly aggravated by the mafia method and purpose.
The precautionary measure, - a note reports - is based on the findings of an investigative activity carried out by the Pagani Carabinieri Station on behalf of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, which brought to light the operation, at least until 2019, of an association that, in the early 80s, placed itself in a position of neutrality in the broader panorama of regional alliances with respect to the opposition between the New Organized Camorra and the New Family.
However, the criminal group later sided with the Nuova Famiglia, following the murder of Mario Iannaco. The investigative activities highlighted, as stated in the note, "the silence of the entrepreneurs who were the target of extortion, considering it a symptomatic element of the existence of the Camorra association and its continuing operation in the territorial context under examination".
