He ordered with a note the murder of an entrepreneur who owned a funeral home business, Giovanni Parente, who had dared to oppose the "monopoly" of the clan of Casale in the “dear deceased” sector.
For this reason, the Court of Appeal of Naples (first section, presided over by Alfonso Barnarano) sentenced to life imprisonment the head of the Caserta gang Francesco Schiavone, known as “Sandokan”, one of the clan’s diehards; even today, connected by videoconference from the prison where he is detained, Sandokan listened to the verdict in silence, taking yet another life sentence of his life.
Not a word, unlike the high chief of the clan Michele Zagaria, who often intervenes in the trials in which he is accused. With Sandokan, his cousin Francesco Schiavone, known as “Cicciariello”, was also sentenced to life imprisonment, who unlike the first has dissociated himself from the clan for some years without ever starting a process of collaboration with justice.
During the trial, Cicciariello admitted his responsibility for the murder. Sandokan and his cousin were acquitted in the first instance. The perpetrators of the crime, which took place in 1996 in Santa Maria la Fossa, have already been convicted, including Cesare Bianco, sentenced to 20 years and ten months.
The crime – it emerged from the trial – was committed because Parente had decided to hold a funeral instead of leaving his job at the agency owned by Lucia Setola, mother-in-law of Antonio Papa, affiliated with the Mezzero clan, referent of the Schiavone clan in the Caserta municipalities of Grazzanise and Santa Maria la Fossa.
Sandokan and his cousin therefore decided to punish Parente for the alleged violation of the agreement that granted the company linked to Papa the monopoly on funerals in the area.
Sandokan was incriminated by a note – never found but reported by clan informants who were considered reliable – sent to his cousin in which he highlighted the problems that were emerging in the Lower Volturno, an area controlled by Cicciariello, specifically related to the funeral agency sector; for the investigators, the letter was an explicit signal to his subordinates to act by eliminating Parente.
