Cases of flu-like illness continue to decline.
According to the latest bulletin from the InfluNet surveillance network of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, 523 Italians fell ill last week, equal to 8,88 people per thousand inhabitants, one point less than the 9,8 of the previous week. In contrast, children and teenagers under 14 years of age.
In this segment of the population, there has been a resurgence of infections which, however, could be driven by respiratory viruses other than influenza, such as the respiratory syncytial virus for which intense circulation has been detected.
The trend of infections in the past week has therefore followed a double trajectory: in adults, infections have continued to decline with rates of 8,17 cases in the 15-64 age group and 5,36 in the over 65s. In the youngest, an increase has been observed, especially in the 0-4 age group, in which the incidence has reached 25,21 cases per thousand inhabitants.
The number of new cases was 10,81 per thousand, instead, in the 5-14 age group. From the virological analysis performed by the laboratories belonging to the InfluNet network, it appears that of the 1.124 samples analyzed, 140 (12,4%) were positive for influenza viruses (type A species).
Among other viruses, respiratory syncytial virus is the most present (195 samples found, equal to 17,3%); only 64 samples (5,7%) were positive for SarsCoV2. Among the Regions, with 16,09 cases per thousand inhabitants, only in Abruzzo is a high intensity of flu-like syndromes recorded.
In the others the intensity is low, except Tuscany, Campania, Marche and Sicily, where it is classified as medium. Overall, since the beginning of the season it is estimated that in Italy flu-like syndromes have affected 8,6 million people.
