"His commitment and sacrifice still represent a point of reference today, a fundamental example for new generations. He was a man who always sought the truth and sacrificed his life in pursuit of it, demonstrating how civic engagement is a fundamental aspect of being a citizen." With these words, the mayor of Naples , Gaetano Manfredi , remembered journalist Giancarlo Siani , killed by the Camorra on September 23, 1985.
"Even today, Siani is an emblematic figure for all of us, but especially for the young people of our community ," he added. Speaking of his personal memories of that September 23, 1985, Manfredi said: "The initial moment was one of uncertainty because the causes of the murder were not fully known. Sinai was a well-known figure, but not a well-known one. Then, afterward, there was great indignation at how such a brutal crime had struck down a free man, a great professional, a great journalist."
Manfredi participated in the laying of a wreath at the plaque dedicated to Giancarlo Siani . Also present were Ottavio Lucarelli , president of the Campania Order of Journalists ; Clementina Cozzolino , municipal president ; Geppino Fiorenza , representative of Libera for Campania; Paolo Siani , former parliamentarian and Giancarlo's brother ; and Nando Dalla Chiesa , former parliamentarian.
