Is called , is a fourth generation exoscope and is the latest addition to the large family of hi-tech equipment recently acquired by the University Hospital Trust di .

Costing around 600 thousand euros and destined for Neurosurgery, the exoscope, the first with these characteristics to be installed in Europe, provides a 3D vision system that allows the neurosurgeon to see the smallest details of the operating field on a 4k monitor, i.e. at very high resolution. The Federico II company thus completes the integrated operating room of Neurosurgery, already equipped with latest-generation microscopic and endoscopic technology.

“With the exoscope, the neurosurgeon looks directly at the monitor in front of him, visible to all members of the team, and thanks to a miniaturized vision system and a robotic arm he is able to make very small and well-defined movements in the operating field”, underlines Paolo Cappabianca, director of the Complex Operating Unit of Neurosurgery.

The exoscope, installed a few days ago, will be used for the treatment of cranial and spinal pathologies. Using the endoscopic endonasal technique, since 1997 the Neurosurgery of Federico II has performed over 2500 skull base interventions.

“The advantages are numerous – adds Cappabianca – for the neurosurgeon, the clarity and detail of the images and the most comfortable position that he can adopt during the operation are important, compared to what happens with the use of the microscope, for the patient, the operation can be more accurate and personalized based on his needs and the pathology. Furthermore, this aspect is fundamental in a university hospital, the vision of the operating field is shared by the entire team, who can follow what happens and perfect their training. In short, the quality and precision of the operation improves by far with the use of this innovative equipment”.

“The General Management strongly pursues technological innovation as it represents a constantly evolving field, with the aim of improving the effectiveness and access to care”, the comment of the general director of the Federico II University Hospital Trust, Giuseppe Longo.
