A WALK WITH HISTORY XV presents 'The Nativity Scene of San Francesco in Greccio', a Nostos Teatro production in collaboration with the Cultural Association “Gli amici di San Francesco”.
From December 15, in the Monumental Complex of San Francesco in Aversa, the Nostos Teatro, in collaboration with the Cultural Association “Gli amici di San Francesco”, brings to the stage “The Nativity Scene of San Francesco in Greccio”.
Historically, the first nativity scene in history was born thanks to Saint Francis of Assisi in Greccio, a small village perched on the Lazio Apennines in the province of Rieti.
In 1223, about two weeks before the feast of the Nativity, after having obtained permission from Pope Honorius III, Francis turned to Giovanni Velita, Lord of Greccio, his friend and follower, confessing his desire to "depict live the scene of the Nativity; to see with the eyes of the body the poverty in which the Child Jesus came into the world, how he was placed in a manger and how he lay there between the ox and the donkey."
For Francis, Christmas was a special occasion: since he had made a trip to the Holy Land, he had kept clear images of Bethlehem in his heart; the evocative landscape of Greccio, with its hills dotted with caves, reminded him so much of the territory of Palestine. Al Velita asked to identify a place, immersed in nature, that could be the backdrop to this revisitation and to prepare the necessary materials for such a representation: an altar, a donkey and an ox, a rag child and a bit of straw.
On December 24, 1223, at midnight, the first nativity scene in history was created.
And it is precisely by following in the footsteps of Francis that, this year, the Nostos Teatro company wants to revive the magic of that night 800 years ago, reconstructing, in the form of a traveling theatrical show, what led Francis to conceive the idea of the Nativity Scene and its staging.
The performance will be part of the traveling theatrical format of “A SPASSO CON LA STORIA” which, in December 2023, reaches its XNUMXth edition.
There will be morning performances open to schools of all levels and evening performances open to everyone. The setting for this wonderful project will be the Monumental Complex of San Francesco, in the center of Aversa, and thanks to the itinerant formula of the format, spectators will have the opportunity to visit this picturesque place following the actors themselves. For this reason, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes. The show will take place in outdoor locations but sheltered from the rain.

Il Our Theatre It is a journey that starts from afar. It travels roads, meets collaborations, matures and becomes what we consider a family today.
Today Nostos is a theatre school with many students from three years old and up and that through training tries to mark new paths and perspectives, colouring the eyes with new views of the world. In reality like ours, often at the limit, the only weapon capable of changing things is culture, we believe in this and for this reason we decide to stay in these difficult lands and indeed continue to travel and research and then return: Nostos in Greek means precisely "return home".
The Cultural Association “Friends of St. Francis” founded in November 2016, was born with the "mission" of conservation, protection and enhancement of the entire structure of the monumental complex, organizing conferences, cultural events and guided tours of the monastery rooms, the museum hall of sacred art, the Nativity Scene Museum.
The Association is regularly registered with AMEI (Association of Italian Ecclesiastical Museums) and has received recognition of esteem over the years from the MIBACT and the SUPERINTENDENCE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE OF Caserta and Benevento.
