SSaturday, December 16 at 15.30:8 pm the first Little Free Library of the Municipality 239 of the City of Naples will be inaugurated in Scampia in the flowerbed of Viale della Resistenza n. XNUMX entrusted to L'Uomo e il Legno, a few steps from the headquarters of the cooperative and the first library of Scampia, La Biblioteca le Nuvole.
From the Le Nuvole Library of the Hurtado Center (Associazione AQuaS), the L'Uomo e il Legno Cooperative, Monica Riccio and Vincenzo Paradisone, respectively vice-president and president of the Consulta delle Associazioni e delle Odv della Municipalità 8 of the Municipality of Naples, the idea of spreading the practice of the Little Free Library also in Scampia and in the territory of Municipality 8 of the Municipality of Naples was born. Starting from Scampia to spread this wonderful practice throughout the city.

A Little Free Library is a small, house-shaped public library where you can find free books to borrow or exchange. The Little Free Library concept was born in the United States in 2009 and was created to promote reading and sharing culture within communities. Today there are thousands of Little Free Libraries around the world that help create a sense of community and sharing through reading.
A bench with eco-friendly lighting will be installed next to the small house-shaped bookcase.
Both the small bookcase and the bench were made from recycled wood.
The first Little Free Library of Scampia will be geolocalized on the map of Little Free Libraries online throughout the world.
The promoting entities
For 35 years, the AQuaS Association – Animazione Quartiere Scampia Ets has been working in the area with its volunteers with the aim of promoting and encouraging activities and initiatives for the support, socio-cultural promotion and training of the poorest and most marginalized groups of the population of the Scampia neighborhood and other popular areas of the city of Naples.
It deals with spreading books and reading through the Biblioteca le Nuvole, the first library in Scampia, with fighting school dropout with after-school programs, in conjunction with institutions and all socio-educational actors in the area, with educating children and young people about music with the Musica libera tutti orchestra since 2011, and with solidarity with many initiatives alongside the most disadvantaged.
The Le Nuvole Library, located at the A. Hurtado Center, was founded by the Jesuit Father Fabrizio Valletti, and inaugurated on April 02, 2006, during the event “rEsistere a Scampia”. Today it has over 10.000 volumes with a particularly important section of children's and young adult literature.
Since March 2018, the Le Nuvole Library has been enabled in the National Index of SBN, with official membership in the Polo SBN Campania (code SBN CAM-LN). The loan service is free and available every day of the week, in the afternoon. The activities are not limited to the loan service alone, which, given the peripheral location in the neighborhood and the territorial conformation of Scampia, would not have enough strength to attract potential readers. Thus, in addition to the loan, the Library offers the area activities for different age groups.
Reading, creative writing, introspective writing workshops, cultural promotion meetings. In particular for the little ones there is “Giocare…Leggendo”, a workshop on how to approach reading through play, theatre, art and manual skills, which involves about 20 children between the ages of 5 and 10 every week, eager to be together, play and grow in a peaceful and joyful environment. “Giocare… Leggendo” aims to initiate, enhance and consolidate the pleasure of reading, arouse attention and interest, educate listening and oral comprehension and to help them acquire the behaviour of a “good reader”, a permanent disposition that makes them remain readers for life.
The L'Uomo e il Legno social cooperative was founded in 1995 as a carpentry workshop for drug addicts.
Over the years, it has expanded its target audience and the range of activities offered, carrying out numerous projects for minors, foreigners, Roma, prisoners, ex-prisoners and all those categories of people who, for various reasons, found themselves living in a disadvantaged condition, not fully exploiting their potential.
Since 2016, it has been managing the agricultural estate in the Secondigliano Prison, effectively becoming an Agricultural Cooperative.
It provides work to a group of inmates and brings quality fruit and vegetables outside, promoting a new perspective on life and giving meaning to the experience of detention. The L'Uomo e il Legno Cooperative has been working for years with the aim of creating a solid community, held together by significant bonds, operating in a context often characterized by isolation, loneliness, lack of meeting places and meaning. The territorial animation action that we try to carry out is implemented in the creation of free events, open to citizens, with recreational, laboratory and awareness-raising activities.
The inauguration is part of the series of events promoted by the Council of Associations of Municipality 8 of the City of Naples "A Christmas of Peace".
After the ribbon cutting and the gifting of books to the children present, a musical performance by the Musica libera tutti orchestra is planned.
It will be a festive day in which the colours of Christmas and the flags of peace will dominate and whose protagonists will be books and childhood.

Our dream is to plant Little Free Libraries throughout the territory of the Municipality and why not, inspire the other neighborhoods of Naples because we believe that there is no gift more precious than a book. Culture must be a right for everyone".
