Yesterday, the Consip (Confederation of Penitentiary Police Unions) organized a protest in front of the Benevento prison, with a representation of the union leaders led by the Campania regional secretary, Luigi Castaldo, and the vice-regional Tommaso De Lia. During the protest, they expressed serious concerns about the existing disconnect between the prison management and the Penitentiary Police staff, calling into question the safety of the Sannio institute and the institutional duties to which the officers have sworn.
The demonstration denounced a work organization that, according to CON.SI.PE, makes it utopian to talk about treatment and re-education. Relations between management and staff were described as “deaf and unsuccessful” by trade unionist Castaldo, who stressed the need to urgently address the situation.
The serious concern expressed concerns the alleged lack of dialogue between the director of the Benevento prison and the Penitentiary Police staff, highlighted by the fact that, while the prison officers were demonstrating peacefully, the director did not receive them. Castaldo underlined the lack of consideration by the penitentiary administration towards the legitimate concerns of the staff.
In response to this situation, a delegation from CON.SI.PE was summoned to the Prefecture, raising further questions about the prison administration's perception of the issues raised by the union. The demonstration was also an opportunity to reiterate CON.SI.PE's commitment to protecting the rights and working conditions of Penitentiary Police personnel, as well as to raise public awareness of the critical issues present in the Benevento prison.
