The tranquility of Via Supportico Fondo di Separazione, located next to the renowned Teatro Mercadante, was recently disturbed by the transformation of a pedestrian area into an outdoor restaurant. A restaurant was accused of occupying almost the entire pedestrian area by installing tables and gazebos for its customers.
The complaint comes from Francesco Emilio Borrelli, deputy of the Green-Sinister alliance, together with Nelide Milano, co-spokesperson for Europa Verde, Rosario Pugliese, member of the regional executive, and Enzo Vasquez, of the Sole che Ride group. The group documented the situation during a recent inspection.
According to Borrelli, converting a pedestrian area into a restaurant extension is difficult to accept. "We will request an investigation by the Municipal Police, especially because the emergency exits of the Mercadante Theater have been blocked and there isn't enough space for wheelchairs ," the MP stated.
The situation is further exacerbated by incidents of violence: the adjacent restaurant, which had reported the occupation of public land, was the victim of a raid that saw its windows smashed and outdoor tables overturned. "These acts of bullying and arrogance are unacceptable. It is unheard of that, despite the evident violations and the complaints filed, adequate checks have still not been carried out," added Borrelli.
The political and civic leaders involved are calling for decisive action to restore order and return the public space to the citizens. "It is unacceptable that a public area be treated like private property, adorned with lights and decorations by a single business owner," Borrelli concludes.
