“Sixth suicide in 8 days. Maybe someone thinks that by not intervening the prisons will be emptied.”
This is the bitter comment of Aldo di Giacomo, general secretary of the penitentiary police union SPP.
“He commits suicide in the prison of Ariano Irpino a 34 of Italian origin, with this we are at 6 in eight days. Campania is the region that pays the highest price in the count of prisoners who committed suicide.
The government and the prison administration are unable to counter this bloodbath of human lives, no concrete measures have been put in place to prevent the phenomenon from spreading, which has now reached record levels with 42 suicides since the beginning of the year.
The much-desired change of direction has not occurred with this government, which has seen an increase in indifference to prison problems."
