Marcianise. The American multinational Jabil confirms its intention to close the Marcianise production plant by March 2025.
For this reason, the only concrete hypothesis on the table is the sale of the site and the 419 employees on its staff to a new company born from the partnership between Tme of Portico di Caserta and Invitalia.
This solution, defined as a “mitigation plan” by law 234 of 2021, was discussed yesterday during a meeting held in the Marcianise plant, in the presence of the national secretaries of the metalworkers' unions.
Workers' doubts
However, unions and workers do not hide their doubts about this plan.
“If they could choose,” explains a union representative, “the workers would not accept any idea of relocation to other companies other than Jabil. We have already seen what happened with employees who have moved to companies like Softlab and Orefice, whose situation is very difficult.”
Furthermore, there is the doubt that the plant, not sustainable for Jabil, could be sustainable for a smaller company such as the one that would be born from the collaboration between Tme and Invitalia.
Alternatives and next steps
Law 234 offers Jabil two options: pay penalties to leave Italy or submit the mitigation plan.
At the moment, unions and workers are not commenting on the plan, waiting for certain guarantees on some fundamental aspects, such as the share of orders that Jabil would leave to the new company.
The goal remains to convince Jabil to stay or to present solutions with concrete long-term future prospects. A new meeting is scheduled for next July 23 at Mimit in Rome to discuss the dispute.
Tensions remain high between workers and the company, with the future uncertain for the 419 employees of the Marcianise plant.
