SEstonian athlete Jana Roose's attempt to cross the Strait of Messina on a slackline, a cable stretched between two pylons that once transported electricity between Calabria and Sicily, was interrupted just meters from the finish line. Roose, a member of the Red Bull team and known for her daring feats, slung over 200 meters above the sea for about 3,6 km on a slackline just 2 cm wide.
After a series of tests, the athlete undertook the final attempt today, starting from the Santa Trada pylon in Villa San Giovanni (Reggio Calabria). The crossing, which lasted 2 hours and 57 minutes, was characterized by exceptional physical resistance and concentration. However, about 50 meters from the arrival at the Torre Faro pylon in Messina, Roose lost his balance, probably due to the strain or the windy conditions in the Strait, falling from the slackline.
Fortunately, she remained attached to the safety cables, avoiding serious injuries. Despite the interruption, Jana Roose set a new record for the longest walk on a wire, exceeding 3 kilometers. Her feat remains a remarkable achievement and an example of determination and courage.
