It comes from the operating rooms of the Pascale a new record: the Cancer Institute of Napoli he confirms himself as the first in Europe in performing two resections of the right colon and one of the thorax with the total removal of the thymus gland.
The podium finish is due to the fact that all three surgeries were performed with the new da Vinci Single Port system, the extraordinary instrument that uses a single surgical access.
To remove the tumor mass, a very small three-centimeter cut is enough. A technique that, while maintaining high surgical radicality, reduces post-operative pain and hospitalization times.
The European record belongs to the teams of Paolo Delrio and Edoardo Mercadante, it marks a notable advancement in colorectal and thoracic surgery and adds to the record achieved a few months ago in the field of urological surgery by Sisto Perdonà with eight operations in two days and the discharge of the patients the following day.
Right hemicolectomy is a procedure that involves resection of the right colon and subsequent ileo-colic suture necessary to re-establish intestinal continuity. Thymectomy, on the other hand, is the total removal of the thymic gland.
In both cases, these are likely pioneering interventions since both Delrio's and Mercadante's teams have completed the entire training course and have been selected to design the next European guidelines for the use of this highly innovative instrument in colorectal and thoracic surgery.
Urogenital system, thorax, abdomen, but not only. Single port technology in the last three months, since it was adopted by Pascale, also highlighted the advantages of robotic surgery of the oropharynx, supraglottic larynx and parapharyngeal space, providing the surgeon with the ability to preserve anatomical structures in a more refined and accurate manner, broadening the indications for surgical treatment of head and neck tumors.
Since the beginning of his activity with the single port Franco Ionna and his team have performed tonsillectomy, supraglottic laryngectomy and oropharyngectomy with numerous advantages also in terms of efficiency and ease of setup for the surgeon and the operating room staff.
The gynecological surgery team, led by Vito Chiantera, needed only a single incision of 25 millimeters to operate on an endometrial and ovarian tumor. In this case too, the patients experienced a very rapid recovery and reduced post-operative pain.
“The Pascale Institute once again confirms itself at the forefront of research and the application of the most modern technologies for the benefit of its patients.
The operations performed in recent days by our surgery represent the result of fantastic teamwork – declares the general director of Pascale Attilio Bianchi – which includes surgeons, anesthetists and all the operating room staff.
This has allowed us to achieve the result of being the first in Europe for the various surgical specialties with the Single Port”.
