Waste investigation in Giugliano – Politics in turmoil in Giugliano, where in recent weeks not only have three judicial investigations been launched involving the municipal administration, but a mysterious 'crow' has also appeared on social media, making accusations and calling for the resignation of Mayor Nicola Pirozzi and his government.
Tensions grew even more a few days ago, when Pirozzi learned that he was being investigated in an inquiry into the tender for the assignment of the waste collection service. Once he learned of the investigation, the mayor decided to suspend himself from the Democratic Party, which is now carefully evaluating the political and administrative situation of the Municipality.
The investigation, which dates back to the summer of 2020, concerns alleged conditioning on the tender for waste management. In addition to Pirozzi, who has led Giugliano since 2020 in a center-left coalition in alliance with the 5 Star Movement, former mayor Antonio Poziello is also under investigation, along with a former councilor and various public officials. It is a complex investigation, with dozens of people under investigation, who in the coming weeks will have the opportunity to present their version of the facts and defend themselves from the accusations.
The Democratic Party, in a note, praised Pirozzi's choice to self-suspend, calling it “consistent with the principles of the Code of Ethics and the Party Statute”. The Action party also declared its support for the mayor, underlining “the importance of the presumption of innocence” as a cardinal principle of democracy. “The investigations must not compromise the work of an administration that has worked with dedication for the community,” it reads in a statement published on social media.
Meanwhile, the city is speculating about the identity of the 'crow', an anonymous figure who for weeks has been making accusations against the Pirozzi administration and calling for its resignation. While political tensions are rising, citizens are waiting for further developments in a case that is keeping the attention high on Giugliano, the second city of Campania, now at the centre of a dense network of investigations and dissenting voices.
