Last night, the Carabinieri of the Pianura station arrested Emanuele Mariano Di Costanzo, 36, already known to the police, for possession of illegal explosive material. During a routine check, the man was stopped in his car near his home. Following a search of the vehicle, the military discovered 600 pyrotechnic firecrackers, presumably destined for the German market.
The story, however, did not end there. The police extended the search to Di Costanzo's home, where they found 30 more homemade devices and three radio-controlled pyrotechnic control units, used to remotely control the explosions.
The man is now accused of illegal possession of explosive material and receiving stolen goods. The discovery of the firecrackers and homemade explosive devices raises fears of an illicit trafficking ring of explosives, which could have much broader implications, not only at a local level. Investigations are continuing to clarify the origin of the material and identify any accomplices.
