An illegal breeding of purebred dogs, set up inside a disused livestock facility in Villa Literno , was discovered by the military of the Carabinieri Forestale Nucleus of Castel Volturno and the Carabinieri Cites Nucleus of Napoli, with the support of the ASL Veterinary Service of Caserta.
During the inspection, 44 purebred dogs were found, including poodles, Maltese and Maltipoo. Of these, only 12, properly separated, were registered to the owners, a Romanian couple, and their children, while the remaining 32 were without microchips.
The investigations revealed that the conditions of detention of the 32 dogs were incompatible with their well-being. The breeding farm had serious hygienic-sanitary and structural deficiencies, with the presence of animal excrement, precarious roofing in sheet metal and wood, dirty blankets, and puppies placed in cardboard boxes and fruit crates.
Some of the dogs showed signs of aggression, probably due to overcrowding and poor detention, being tied with ropes of about one meter that severely limited their fundamental freedoms: from hunger and thirst, to the possibility of living in an adequate environment, free from pain and disease, and capable of expressing natural behaviors.
In addition, several dogs suffered from dermatitis and parasite infestations. In light of these serious violations, the military proceeded with the judicial seizure of the 32 dogs without microchips, believing that they were subjected to mistreatment and detained in conditions incompatible with their nature, causing them serious suffering. The seized animals were microchipped and entrusted to a kennel affiliated with the ASL, pending the decisions of the judicial authority.
The couple were reported at large for animal cruelty and keeping dogs in conditions incompatible with their well-being.
